At The Happiness Index we feel it's important for our platform users to have a choice in how they view our platform. Therefore, our platform is available in light and dark mode. To help you decide which is right for you we have put together a quick guide to help you decide.
What is light mode?
Light mode is when the primary background colour is a light colour, for example white or light grey and the text is usually black. It emulates the look of ink on paper, making text more readable.
Pros of using light mode
Many platforms will have been optimised for use with light mode due to the fact that platform users with standard/normal vision usually get a better visual performance with light mode. This is because light mode often gives the user the ability to perceive and identify objects or small details which have low contrast to the surroundings.
What is dark mode?
Dark mode is when the primary background colour for a platform is dark, for example black or dark grey. It is the polar opposite to the traditional black text on white backgrounds that we see in light mode. As we spend more and more time with our screens, the discovery that dark themes reduce eye strain has meant that dark modes have become more popular with users.
Pros of using dark mode
Dark mode is often easier on the eyes and it can reduce eye strain. In dark mode less blue light is required, meaning fewer negative effects on sleep and general health. Dark mode can also give productivity a boost. It makes users feel a little less reluctant about working on the computer as less blue light means users may suffer less eye strain and fewer headaches.
Summary
In general whether a user prefers light or dark mode will be down to personal preference. For most people, the decision will come down to habit and the type and duration of platform usage.
