The Meaning and Purpose Neuroscience Theme

How do we define Meaning and Purpose?

Meaning is a term used to denote something of personal value and importance. It’s an internal motivator. Purpose is more of a ‘why’ question and something we can take into the world.

Where does Meaning and Purpose sit in our neuroscience model?

Meaning and Purpose sits within the Reflective Brain System which is located in the Prefrontal Cortex region of the brain. In our neuroscience model the Reflective Brain System is linked to Engagement. In the image below you can see Meaning and Purpose sitting underneath Engagement and Reflective.

What are the 3 core areas that make up Meaning and Purpose?

The 3 core areas which make up the neuroscience theme of Meaning and Purpose are:

  1. Inspiration
  2. Commitment
  3. Values

1st Core Area: Inspiration

Inspiration is the inner sensation which motivates us to do something important, a state where we are prepared to engage with a significant challenge regardless of the difficulties it may present.

When we are inspired, we have the potential to be our best and to summon all of our personal talent. Inspiration can be triggered by our external experience or by our own internal thoughts.

2nd Core Area: Commitment

Commitment is a state of emotional attachment to a cause. It’s something we feel as a sense of belonging and purpose which is personally meaningful to our own life journey.

It’s a state of emotional engagement where we identify with a wider human group or purpose. At its higher energetic level, it can be described as passion!

3rd Core Area: Values

We develop our personal values through life, especially in our younger years. Our values act as emotional guides that indicate what we want to experience in terms of human connection and concepts, e.g. fairness, justice...

Sharing our sense of values is critical to sustaining team journeys where we engage with others who want to share the same emotional experiences.
