How do we define Personal Growth?
To grow is something all human beings want and need - Loosely speaking, it is the process of fulfilling our own potential.
Growth opportunities offer us new experiences, challenges and learning both inside and outside the workplace.
Where does Personal Growth sit in our neuroscience model?
Personal Growth sits within the Reflective Brain System which is located in the Prefrontal Cortex region of the brain. In our neuroscience model the Reflective Brain System is linked to Engagement. In the image below you can see Personal Growth sitting underneath Engagement and Reflective.
What are the 3 core areas that make up Personal Growth?
The 3 core areas which make up the neuroscience theme of Relationships are:
- Personal Development
- Career Progression
- Challenges
1st Core Area: Personal Development
We are designed to evolve and grow. Standing still results in stagnation and inflexibility.
People need opportunities to expand their experience and expose themselves to new learning. This helps us feel engaged. Experiencing novelty is an important element of keeping the brain alert.
2nd Core Area: Career progression
Seeing our personal development journeys translate into new job responsibilities is a great source of sustainable motivation.
It provides the emotional reward that validates our efforts and keeps us on track. Taking ownership of increased or different responsibilities is a meaningful challenge that supports our sense of moving forward.
3rd Core Area: Challenges
To maintain a sense of momentum we need to feel appropriately challenged in our roles. The key is achieving the right balance.
Feeling a little outside of our personal comfort zone is a good place for personal growth as we have to engage our wider potential to succeed. If this goes too far, we will retreat into survival mode - where we resist change and new demands.
