The Relationships Neuroscience Theme

How do we define Relationships?

Positive relationships sustain us emotionally and drive us at work. They need to be authentic or could easily break down.

Where does Relationships sit in our neuroscience model?

Relationships sits within the Emotional Brain System which is located in the Limbic region of the brain. In our neuroscience model the Emotional Brain System is linked to Happiness. In the image below you can see Relationships sitting underneath Happiness and Emotional.

What are the 3 core areas that make up Relationships?

The 3 core areas which make up the neuroscience theme of Relationships are:

  1. Personal Relationships
  2. Energetic Connections
  3. Team Dynamics.

1st Core Area: Personal Relationships

The relationship between employee and immediate manager is always important. It can have a substantial impact on the employee’s daily experience and set the conditions for emotional success or failure.

The term line manager might sound like an outdated term these days but no matter how flat your internal org chart is, there will be some kind of power dynamic in play and these relationships will impact the happiness of your employees.

2nd Core Area: Energetic Connections

Feeling energetically connected to our colleagues is that sense of just “getting” each other. We are on the same wavelength and naturally ‘click’.

In the calmer state this is empathy. When we are energised this can become a ‘buzzing’ team - a natural unforced state of understanding, togetherness and bonding.

3rd Core Area: Team Dynamics

Continuing the above theme there is a particular dynamic around teamwork that can give us a sense of community and collective bonding.

Being able to connect with a team provides a vital social ingredient to our emotional needs and gives us the opportunity to feel that we belong.
