How do we define Acknowledgement?
An area organisations regularly fall down on, acknowledgement is one of the most important human needs.
It is the feeling of being heard and an emotional validation of who we are and what we are experiencing.
Where does Acknowledgement sit in our neuroscience model?
Acknowledgement sits within the Emotional Brain System which is located in the Limbic region of the brain. In our neuroscience model the Emotional Brain System is linked to Happiness. In the image below you can see Acknowledgement sitting underneath Happiness and Emotional.
What are the 3 core areas that make up Acknowledgement?
The 3 core areas which make up the neuroscience theme of Relationships are:
- Feeling listened to
- Recognition
- Feedback
1st Core Area: Feeling listened to
When we express a thought or feeling it is important to us that our views are heard. This is a subtle, yet super important experience that helps us understand our impact on the world.
Not being listened to is a form of sensory deprivation and is emotionally destabilising. It can make us feel unsure about who we are and whether we are important.
2nd Core Area: Recognition
Recognition informs us that we are doing things right and gives us a sense of emotional validation.
This is not limited to formalised recognition schemes and rewards - it’s the much wider and richer tapestry of human to human acknowledgement expressed at an authentic interpersonal level.
3rd Core Area: Feedback
Regular feedback is a vital part of emotional sustainability and growth. Feedback is a gift but most of us are pretty rubbish at giving and receiving feedback.
Getting timely and relevant levels of feedback - delivered appropriately - can be a critical personal development opportunity. It can help people keep track of their meaningful career journeys.
