How can we help you today?

Platform accessibility

The Happiness Index understands the need for everyone, with all different backgrounds and needs, to access our Platform so that every voice can be heard.

We are guided by the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). WCAG are an internationally recognised set of recommendations for improving web accessibility.

They explain how to make digital services, websites and apps accessible to everyone, including users with impairments to their:

  • Vision - like severely sight impaired (blind), sight impaired (partially sighted) or colour blind people
  • Hearing - like people who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Mobility - like those who find it difficult to use a mouse or keyboard
  • Thinking and understanding - like people with dyslexia, autism or learning difficulties

WCAG is based on four design principles:

  • Perceivable
  • Operable
  • Understandable
  • Robust

When we are scoping and designing our platform developments at The Happiness Index we ensure these design principles are considered so our platform is accessible to all.

How are our Platform and the survey response screen accessible?

Our platform is perceivable so users can perceive its content

  • There are captions on all audio and video content
  • Survey questions can be read aloud (uses Web Speech API) (available upon request)
  • All important actions have multiple ways to understand e.g. answering a question uses a scale bar, a number selector and a colour
  • The user can choose between light and dark mode
  • A screen reader can be used

Our platform is operable so users can navigate and operate components

  • It can be navigated using a keyboard
  • Users have the option to provide a score with a slider or radial buttons
  • There are no time limits on actions like responding to a question
  • There is no flashing content, auto playing content, uncontrollable content

Our platform is understandable so users can understand its content

  • Responses can be changed after they have been initially selected
  • Every question behaves in a predictable way
  • Input errors are clearly identified

Our platform is robust so it can be interpreted by a variety of assistive technologies

  • It is compatible with user agents e.g. screen magnifiers, screen readers, text-to-speech software, speech recognition software, alternative keyboards, or alternative pointing devices
  • It can be used on web, tablet or phone
